Pippen has taken a break from his recent angry-bashing of Michael Jordan in order to take aim at Charles Barkley and Hakeem Olajuwon. He’s not the only one who blames them, but he is the most vocal.
Scottie Pippen has taken a break from bashing Michael Jordan to blame Charles Barkley and Hakeem Olajuwon for their failed stint with the “superteam” Rockets.
Scottie Pippen is a basketball player who plays for the Chicago Bulls. is now on a massive bridge-burning rampage, and no one is safe. As he promotes his new biography, the Chicago Bulls icon has been criticizing old pals like Michael Jordan and Phil Jackson, and now he’s going after his former Houston Rockets colleagues.
In a recent interview, Pippen blamed Charles Barkley and Hakeem Olajuwon for the Rockets’ failure to live up to expectations in the 1998-99 season. After all of this, he’s not going to have any more pals.

The Bulls’ players all went their own ways after they won the NBA championship for the second time in 1998, completing their second three-peat. Michael Jordan departed the NBA to join the Washington Wizards as a part-owner, Phil Jackson took a year off from coaching, and Dennis Rodman joined the Los Angeles Lakers.
Pippen didn’t want to stay in Chicago by himself, so he worked out a deal with the Bulls to move him to Houston. In 1997, the Rockets had just advanced to the Western Conference Finals, and they already had a championship-caliber core in place, led by Barkley and Olajuwon.
The missing component was meant to be Pippen.
The Rockets, however, lost in the first round of the 1999 Western Conference playoffs to the Lakers after finishing 31-19 during the lockout-shortened regular season. Pippen requested and received a trade to the Portland Trail Blazers after a disappointing season in Houston.
And now we understand why.
Charles Barkley and Hakeem Olajuwon are to blame for Scottie Pippen’s dismal spell with the Rockets.
Pippen appears on a different program every other day to criticize one of his former colleagues. He’s largely been slamming Jordan to promote his new book, “Unguarded,” but he recently lashed out Barkley and Olajuwon as well.
Pippen blamed the two Hall of Famers for the Rockets’ early elimination from the 1999 playoffs during an interview with Frank Isola on Sirius XM NBA Radio.
To some extent, I felt I was joining a superteam, but it didn’t work out. We just didn’t have the appropriate chemistry, and we were beginning to show signs of age. Coming off a second back surgery, I didn’t think it was a good match for me. I needed some more youth in my life. I had no idea how much Hakeem had deteriorated in the game. I’ll be honest, I didn’t realize Charles wasn’t as committed as I had assumed he would be.
Was it their responsibility, therefore, that Pippen shot 6-of-23 in Game 4 against the Lakers to send them home? We’ll put the phone down and listen.
Because of Barkley’s work ethic, Pippen requested a trade to the Blazers.
Pippen anticipated that joining the Rockets would help Barkley win the championship he had yearned for throughout his career, but it didn’t turn out that way. So he asked for a trade to Portland after one season with him.
“I went to Houston to assist Charles Barkley win a championship, and once I got there, I felt like his passion wasn’t there,” Pippen said Isola. “And I had six [championships], so it wasn’t like I was trying to go out of my way to win a title, which is why I requested for the trade.” I ended up in Portland with a younger, more hungry squad, and guys that I could sort of stand behind instead of in front of.”
Pippen, on the other hand, was unable to win another title in Portland. I’m not sure who was to blame for it, since it wasn’t his.
