Chris Broussard, ESPN NBA analyst and former player, shut down the narrative that Russell Westbrook is a “loser” in his latest article for The Undefeated. He argues that while Russ has had some bad games, he’s won more than Steve Nash did in his career.
Chris Broussard, an ESPN NBA analyst, shut down the Russell Westbrook is a loser narrative by saying that he has won more games than Steve Nash and that Nash had great teams too.
The Florida Sun-Sentinel
Since his time with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook has perhaps his greatest opportunity to win an NBA title. Westbrook joined the Los Angeles Lakers to create the NBA’s newest superteam alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis. For a long time, Westbrook has been one of the greatest players in the NBA, even earning the MVP award in 2017.
However, he hasn’t had much luck in the playoffs in recent years, typically exiting in the first or second round. Westbrook and Kevin Durant last made it to the Conference Finals in 2016, when they squandered a 3-1 lead to the 73-9 Golden State Warriors. Durant eventually joined the Warriors during the following summer. Westbrook has struggled in the playoffs since then. Westbrook has been labeled a ‘failure’ as a result of his difficulties, which is rather unjust.
On Undisputed, NBA expert Chris Broussard discussed Russell Westbrook’s tarnished image. Russell Westbrook’s image as a “loser” is absurd, according to him. Given how consistent Westbrook has been throughout the years, he doesn’t believe his reputation is deserved. Westbrook is a former NBA MVP who has played in the NBA Finals at a young age.
Furthermore, Westbrook continues to play at a high level and demonstrate his ability to put up absurd statistics. Broussard likened him to Steve Nash, another legendary point guard. Nash had better teams than Westbrook, he said, but Westbrook was still more successful. Westbrook isn’t a ‘failure’ because he hasn’t won an NBA title.
“If he (Russell Westbrook) wins a championship, and I’m assuming he does, I’m sure he’ll play a major part in it… If they (the Los Angeles Lakers) win the title and he is a role player scoring 13 points per game and playing less minutes down the line, it won’t benefit him much. But there can be no critics if he wins the title as part of a legitimate big three, and he is important and you see his contributions.”
“This guy has achieved everything on his own. In addition to winning the MVP title, he averaged a triple-double four times, a feat that no other player in NBA history has accomplished, and he was a nine-time All-NBA selection. And then there was the winning… I’m aware that he has yet to win a title. But the idea that he can’t win is exaggerated.”
“He’s played in four Conference Finals and has gone to the NBA Finals. He has more wins than Steve Nash, who had excellent teams as well, including Amar’e Stoudemire, Joe Johnson, and Shawn Marion. More championships have been won by Westbrook than by Nash. So all I’m saying is that he’s not a loser who can’t possibly win. He hasn’t won a title, that’s all.”
Westbrook has a poor image among fans and experts as a result of his struggles over the past several years. Many people think that Westbrook cannot be a championship team’s number one choice. As a result, Westbrook has been labeled a ‘loser,’ someone who will always come close to winning an NBA Championship but never make it.
This is why many people have chastised the Los Angeles Lakers for making this decision, claiming that Westbrook is incapable of winning an NBA title. However, Westbrook remains one of the greatest players in the game and will immediately improve the Lakers next season.
