Millions of passengers will be traveling to and from Southern California on Thursday, the busiest travel day of the year for Los Angeles International Airport. Passengers can expect long lines at security checkpoints, transit hubs, baggage claim areas, taxi stands and parking lots. LAX is also adding 1 million gallons of water per hour into its system during peak hours in anticipation of a possible fire or power outage caused by a wave crashing similarly to what happened in July 2018 when an earthquake shut down pumps that drain excess water from terminals.

(CBSLA) – LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – As the Christmas season approaches, millions of passengers will be flying through Los Angeles International Airport in the coming weeks. Many people will be traveling for the first time in years, owing in large part to the Coronavirus outbreak.

While some travelers are anticipating vacations such as postponed honeymoons and other getaways due to COVID-19, the great majority are looking forward to seeing their families and rekindling treasured family traditions with a fresh perspective, barely a year after many spent the holidays alone.
New restrictions and obligations, such as wearing masks inside airports and on flights, as well as fresh safety precautions at practically every airport throughout the country, should give those tourists a new perspective on flying in 2021.
As if flying through Los Angeles International Airport wasn’t already unpleasant enough, passengers could anticipate a plethora of additional issues in 2021.
As part of a refurbishment project that started in 2018, the airport is currently under development. The Landside Access Modernization Project, or LAMP, is a $5.5 billion effort designed at relieving traffic congestion at LAX via a range of forthcoming improvements.
This present project has engulfed three terminals, resulting in fewer drop-off lines, check-in desks, parking spaces, and lounging areas… Except for crowds, there will be less of everything.
A total of two million passengers are scheduled to fly in and out of LAX.

Over 20 million individuals are expected to be inspected by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on the weekends preceding Thanksgiving, with 10% of those passengers flying via LAX. However, according to the airport, this is still less than two-thirds of the pre-pandemic levels seen in 2019.
Those planning to leave their vehicle at LAX while on vacation should be advised that parking spaces, which are always few, are much more scarce this early in the tourist season. Not to mention costly: some on-site indoor parking lots charge as much as $50 per day.
The newly-opened LAX Economy Parking Lot costs $20 per day for those searching for a less expensive option, but the off-site location has already created annoyance, with some passengers taking up to 30 minutes to get to LAX after parking.
According to reports, getting to the airport is already expensive enough, with ridesharing alternatives costing more than twice what they did in 2019.
Travelers who are strangely enraged should be cautious of other disruptive people, which have increased dramatically in 2021, with over 5,000 documented occurrences of belligerent passengers so far this year.
Regardless of the circumstances, travelers are eager to return to some kind of routine after an 18-month hiatus.

Anyone planning to travel in the coming weeks should allow plenty of time, check baggage at least an hour before departure, and remove any unwanted items from carry-on luggage, according to the TSA. TSA is allowing one bottle of hand sanitizer up to 12 oz. for the first time.
