The Frozen Four is the championship round of the NCAA Men’s Division I Ice Hockey Championship. It takes place during April and typically features four teams that have won their regional tournaments, which are all held in a span of about one week.

The other three teams are among the sport’s most successful programs: Michigan is in the The Frozen Four (Frozen Four) for the 26th time and has won nine national titles, Minnesota is in the The Frozen Four (Frozen Four) for the 22nd time and has won five national titles, and Denver is in the national semifinals for the 17th time after winning it all eight times.
So, what will it take for each squad to take home the championship? We asked ESPN college hockey experts Dave Starman, Paul Caponigri, and Sean Ritchlin what the Pioneers, Wolverines, Gophers, and Mavericks need to accomplish to skate away with a national championship from Boston.

If…, Denver will win.
Dave Starman: The Pioneers will be in fantastic condition if their second line of Carter Mazur, Massimo Rizzo, and Cameron Wright has an influence on the game and their third line of Brett Stapley causes matchup concerns against Michigan’s third defensive unit. Furthermore, Denver’s possession game, particularly in the offensive zone, may cause Michigan’s younger squad to get agitated. The Pioneers score a lot of goals when they have the ball, so puck control is crucial.
Paul Caponigri: The power play will be really important. The Pioneers didn’t click in the regionals (0-for-7 versus UMass Lowell and Minnesota Duluth combined), but they still managed to win, so you have to give them credit for that. However, the power play must be at its best versus Michigan, since Denver will most likely need to score a few goals to win.
Sean Ritchlin: The offense will be led by Bobby Brink, the nation’s top scorer, and linemates Cole Guttman and Carter Savoie. Denver has scored 4.3 goals per game on average (the highest in the league), is deep, and can attack in waves, with eight players scoring at least 10 goals. But they can also win a close game, and defeating Minnesota Duluth in the regionals should give them the confidence to win a championship.
If…, Michigan will win.
Starman: My late friend Dennis “Red” Gendron, who passed away during last year’s The Frozen Four (Frozen Four), used to say, “The team that gets off the bus with the best players usually wins,” and that holds true. Michigan’s skill players can turn a game around. But the Wolverines will need to clean up their defensive play and win more defensive zone faceoffs. Denver is as good a faceoff team as there is; Michigan has to be just as good.
Caponigri: Simply said, Michigan has to be able to control the puck. I’m not going to sugarcoat it: I believe the Wolverines will win the tournament if they play their best game, but they must make solid puck choices. They’ll be OK if they make the skill plays — and they have enough of them — and handle the puck at crucial moments. When Michigan has a huge lead, it has a habit of pulling its foot off the throttle, but I don’t believe that will happen here.
Ritchlin: The speed and skill on the Wolverines has been well documented with seven first-round NHL draft picks on the team. They are lethal on the man advantage and can push the pace all game long. They are loaded with depth as well and can create from anywhere on the ice to turn defense into offense. But in order to hoist the trophy, they will need to compete for 60 minutes in the The Frozen Four (Frozen Four) — that hasn’t always been the case for them this year.
Minnesota will be victorious if…
Starman: Minnesota will win if Matt Knies is the game’s greatest player, as stated before. The Gophers must create off the rush and generate excellent looks for their top scorers fast; they are a terrific first-strike team. They’ll also want to take use of their speed on the back end to get strong outs and defeat Minnesota State’s defensive sets. They’ll also need Justen Close, their rookie goalkeeper, to avoid making rookie blunders.
Caponigri: The Gophers must continue on their current path. As a powerful defensive duo, Brock Faber and Ryan Johnson are leading the way; both of them playing more than 30 minutes against UMass in the regionals was astounding. Then Close will have to perform his usual good game. He doesn’t have to be outstanding; all he has to do is make the saves in front of him.
Ritchlin: Minnesota’s defenders will be the ones to set the tone. Bob Motzko’s six blueliners are among the best in college hockey, and they excel at moving pucks out of their zone with outstanding exit passes. Up front, Ben Meyers is providing excellent leadership by bringing in a quality bunch of freshman. The Big Ten regular-season champions are battle-tested, and their strong defensive core has the intangibles to help Minnesota win another championship.
Minnesota State will be victorious if…
Dryden McKay, the Mavericks’ starting goaltender, must perform as expected. He doesn’t have to be spectacular, but rebound control and crease management will be crucial. They must also win the possession game, with no poor giveaways and by forcing their opponent to run 200 feet to generate opportunities, despite their size and expertise. Finally, they must prevent opponents from driving through the center channels, deflect outside assaults, and remain out of the penalty box.

Denver always manages to find a way. The most important thing for Denver is that the Pioneers developed other ways to win outside relying just on attack. They came in as a high-octane attack with a potent power play, but it wasn’t working out for them, and they were facing some tough defensive clubs. They did, however, find other methods to win, which was quite remarkable. Coach David Carle must be pleased with his team’s ability to grind out games and find new ways to win.

In Boston, expect a high-speed pursuit. The game between Denver and Michigan will be thrilling. The Pioneers offense will face a squad that is similar to them in that they want to run and gun. Their power play and top line will be crucial once again, and they should be able to return to what they’re accustomed to: Let’s go and pick up the tempo. It’ll be an entertaining clash.
Increasing the number of people in a room increases the level of excitement. The Denver-Minnesota Duluth final drew a sellout audience of almost 7,000 people on Saturday afternoon. I’m all with getting the biggest audiences possible, whatever the NCAA decides to do it. When planning five days ahead of time, logistics may get complex, but in women’s college basketball, the first two rounds are played on campus, so it might be an option. ALBANY
Mavericks are difficult to break. Notre Dame had around five seconds of possession time between the dots underneath the offensive blue line in the waning minutes of the Mavericks’ 1-0 regional final victory. Keeping a team on the perimeter is a terrific method to keep them off the scoreboard. On defense, they gap well to slow down attempts and back-check well, so anybody attempting to attack them will be met with front and back pressure, effectively eliminating the center of the ice. The issue is whether Minnesota State can do to Minnesota what it has done to the rest of the country. Minnesota will be the best team the Mavericks have ever faced, based on their current form.
Smith’s wrister should be avoided. Nathan Smith, who scored the game’s lone goal, has as excellent a wrist shot as anybody in the country, an NHL release, and is pinpoint precise. It’s incredible that he scores so many goals with the ball on his stick for less than a second. Minnesota State has the ability to score; it isn’t the Edmonton Oilers of 1986, but the club has the ability to score. Despite being geared to win in the paint, the squad scores a lot of goals on initial shots, giving them a diverse advantage.
North Dakota and Harvard are both on the upswing. Watch out next year if Harvard brings back the majority of their players. They have so much talent; now they must find out part two, which is how difficult this game can be and that there is more to it than simply skating up and down the rink. The Crimson has the potential to be frightening. Riese Gaber of North Dakota stood out despite Notre Dame’s refusal to give him a chance. He’s unique in that he understands how to go open, score, and has a lot of tenacity. The Hawks have regained their status as one of the best teams in the nation. Michigan is a state in the United States (31-9-1)
What brought them here: Seed: No. 1 in Allentown, Big Ten champion
The Wolverines have the most star power in the country, with four of the top five choices in the 2021 NHL draft on their roster. As a result, they’ve had players miss time to compete in the Olympics and World Juniors, but they still finished second in the Big Ten behind Minnesota, then avenged four regular-season losses to Notre Dame by defeating the Irish in the tournament semifinals and defeating the Gophers in the championship game.
This is Michigan’s 39th NCAA appearance, tied with Minnesota for the most of all time. The Wolverines have been to the The Frozen Four (Frozen Four) 25 times and won nine national championships, the last coming in 1998.
Quinnipiac University (32-7-3)
What brought them here: Seed: No. 2 in Allentown for at-large berth
Quinnipiac’s ability to keep opponents off the scoreboard is almost unfathomable, but the Bobcats can also put the puck in the back of the goal. (In the ECAC final defeat to Harvard, they outshot Harvard 49-17.) In 40 games, the Bobcats have only allowed 42 goals, with freshman Yaniv Perets compiling a 0.97 GAA and 11 shutouts.
This is Quinnipiac’s eighth NCAA appearance and seventh in the last nine tournaments. The Bobcats have made the The Frozen Four (Frozen Four) twice; they were national runners-up in 2013 and 2016.
St. Cloud State University (18-15-4)
What brought them here: Seed: No. 3 in Allentown for at-large berth
In their previous 16 games, St. Cloud had just four regulation victories, including a 3-0 loss to Minnesota Duluth in the NCHC playoffs. Even yet, considering the NCHC’s high level of competition and the team’s expertise in important games, the reigning national runner-up should not be underestimated. In addition, the Huskies feature the nation’s greatest power play (.315 success rate).
This is St. Cloud State’s 15th NCAA appearance since 2000. The Huskies have made the The Frozen Four (Frozen Four) twice (2013, 2021).
AIC is an acronym for the acronym for the acronym (22-13-3)
What brought them here: Seed: No. 4 in Allentown, Atlantic champ
After a 7-0 win against Air Force in the Atlantic title game, AIC is back in the NCAA tournament. The Yellow Jackets began the season with a 3-9 record, but have since gone on a five-game winning streak, averaging 5.4 goals per game.
This is AIC’s third NCAA appearance in a row. Despite being the No. 16 overall seed each time, the Yellow Jackets pulled off a big shock by defeating St. Cloud State 2-1 in 2019.
Minnesota State University is a public university in Minnesota (37-5-0)
What brought them here: Seed: No. 1 in Albany, CCHA champion
The Mavericks won the CCHA championship on Saturday night, capping off a strong season with a victory against Bemidji State. They have the best goal difference in the country, averaging over three goals per game more than their opponents, while also ranking first in goals scored (165) and second in goals allowed (162). Minnesota State has made four straight NCAA tournaments and seven of the last nine. The Mavericks made the The Frozen Four (Frozen Four) for the first time last year, losing to St. Cloud State in the semifinals.
North Dakota is a state in North America (24-14-1)

Before falling in the NCHC quarterfinals to Western Michigan, North Dakota had won nine of ten games and had swept weekend series from both Western Michigan and Minnesota Duluth in February. North Dakota’s main concern is its players’ health, notably Jake Sanderson, who is one of the top defenseman in the nation but whose future is uncertain. Despite this, the Fighting Hawks went 11-3 this season sans Sanderson.
This is North Dakota’s 34th NCAA appearance; the Fighting Hawks have missed out only three times since 1997. North Dakota has been in the The Frozen Four (Frozen Four) 22 times and won eight national championships, most recently in 2016.
Notre Dame is a Catholic university in the United States (28-12-0)
What brought them here: Seed for at-large berth: No. 3 in Albany
The Irish fell in the Big Ten semifinals to Michigan, but they had won 13 of their previous 16 games in the second half of the regular season, including eight of their last nine, including a victory over Minnesota and a weekend sweep of Michigan. Notre Dame has a well-balanced offense and defense, ranking 11th in goals per game and sixth in goals against average.
This is Notre Dame’s sixth consecutive NCAA appearance and 13th overall. The Irish have made the The Frozen Four (Frozen Four) four times (2008, 2011, 2017, 2018).
Harvard University (21-11-3)
What brought them here: Seed: No. 4 in Albany, ECAC champion
Harvard is on a roll right now. In a 4-3 overtime triumph over RPI in the ECAC quarterfinals, the Crimson scored three goals with an extra attacker in the last 3:42 of regulation, then defeated Quinnipiac in OT in the championship game despite being outshot 49-17. It’s all part of a 13-3-1 run that has led to an unlikely NCAA appearance. Harvard, on the other hand, must be taken seriously, since it is just outside the top ten in both scoring offense and defense nationwide.
This is Harvard’s 26th NCAA appearance, and its fifth in six opportunities. (The Ivy League didn’t play hockey in 2021.) The Crimson have been to the The Frozen Four (Frozen Four) 13 times and won one national championship (1989).
Michigan’s western region (26-12-1)
What brought them here: Seed for at-large berth: No. 1 in Worcester
The high-scoring Broncos were on a roll after a February setback, scoring 21 goals in five consecutive victories before being blanked by Minnesota Duluth in the NCHC final game. Western Michigan ranks fourth in the USA with 3.7 goals per game this season, led by Ethen Frank (26) who has 26 goals.
Western Michigan is making their sixth NCAA appearance and first since 2017. The Broncos are looking for their first victory in the NCAA tournament.

Nine of the Minutemen’s previous 18 power-play opportunities have been converted.

Northeastern came on late in the season to win the Hockey East regular-season title before falling in the playoffs against UConn. The Huskies are dangerous because of goalie Devon Levi, who has a 1.52 GAA, which is third in the US.
This is Northeastern’s eighth NCAA appearance and its third in four tournaments. The Huskies are looking to move past the first round for the first time since 1982, when they made their lone The Frozen Four (Frozen Four) appearance, losing in the semifinals.

Denver, the best team in the best league, won the NCHC regular-season championship before falling in the conference semifinals to Minnesota Duluth. The NCHC contains five of the top ten teams in the PairWise rankings. This season, the Pioneers have scored five or more goals 20 times and are leading the league in goals per game (4.38). Bobby Brink, a junior, is the highest scorer in the country (14 goals, 41 assists).

Minnesota Duluth, which has made it to the last four The Frozen Four (Frozen Four)s, is making its seventh consecutive NCAA appearance and 15th overall. The Bulldogs have won three national championships, including back-to-back titles in 2018 and ’19.
Michigan Tech is a university in the state of Michigan (21-13-3)
What brought them here: Seed: No. 3 in Loveland, at-large berth
Michigan Tech was on a run in the second half of the season, winning 11 of 12 games before falling to top-ranked Minnesota State in a pair of one-goal contests. After defeating Ferris State in the CCHA quarterfinals, the Huskies were defeated 5-2 in the semifinals by Bemidji State. Tech’s scoring defense ranks fourth in the country, allowing 2.0 goals per game.
Michigan Tech is making their fourth NCAA participation since 2015, and its 14th overall, with ten occurring between 1956 and 1981.
Lowell, Massachusetts (UMass Lowell) (21-11-3)

The River Hawks, a gritty, defensive-minded squad (2.09 goals allowed per game, eighth in the NCAA), scored seven goals against Merrimack in the Hockey East quarterfinals before falling to UMass in the semifinals.
This is UMass Lowell’s ninth NCAA appearance and its first since 2017. The River Hawks have lost in the first round only once (1988), but have made the The Frozen Four (Frozen Four) only once, losing in the semifinals in 2013.
